Hi folks! Well Its time for me to show you once again a very cool animal oftenly called “dove” or “pigeon” yipee! They are commonly called “kalapati” in our country and as far as I can recall, I usually see them on either Wedding ceremonies or in those cages of their breeder who sells them and makes them as a tool to get other pigeons. This is called “dagitan” in Filipino. Pigeons have done so many things to our world that we seem to under appreciate. Did you know that medieval knights put the skin of pigeons on their sword handles to improve the grip? Well I wonder how do they do it but anyways… If you think they are weak, you might want to think again because pigeons can last longer without water than a camel can! During World war II and III, pigeons made a great role for saving not only hundreds but thousand of lives! They are responsible for the essential communications that time when all the mode of communications were banned. Musically speaking, they made a record for being oldest playable musical instrument in the World! ^_^ Pigeons are good animals in whatever aspect. As a matter of fact, the risk of a man being struck by pigeons is one occurrence every 9,300 years! Isn’t that unbelievable? You might want to say that “blah blah blah, their poos have cause much trouble on our properties!”. Although pigeon poo is seen as a major problem for property owners in the 21st Century, it was considered to be an invaluable resource in the 16th, 17th and 18th century in Europe. Pigeon poop was a highly prized fertilizer and considered to be far more potent than farmyard manure. So prized in fact that armed guards were stationed at the entrances to dovecotes (pigeon houses) to stop thieves stealing it! Not only this, but in England in the 16th century pigeon poop was the only known source of saltpeter, an essential ingredient of gunpowder and was considered a highly valued commodity as a result. Don’t hurt these lovely birds, appreciate every moment you see them! for they can sleep for as long as three and a half years and in addition to that, most birds take a sip of water and throw back their heads to let the water trickle down their throats. But pigeons suck up water, using their beaks like straws making them to be unique. I do hope that I’ve share a few new information to you guys!
